Visiting the Sainte Chapelle is almost a must on any trip to Paris. Its stained glass windows, Gothic architecture and history make it one of the most important monuments of the Île de la Cité.

Sainte Chapelle: a must-see in Paris

The Sainte Chapelle is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant symbol in Christian history. Erected as a shrine to safeguard precious relics of Christ's Passion, including the Crown of Thorns and a fragment of the Holy Cross, this church, situated on the Île de la Cité in Paris, is an essential destination in the French capital.

Once inside the Sainte Chapelle, marvel at its renowned stained glass windows that form the essence of the structure. Fifteen towering windows, each standing at 15 meters (49 feet), showcase over 1,000 scenes from both the New and Old Testaments. Your ticket allows you to explore the chapel, where you can admire the striking combination of red and blue columns in the lower church.

Moreover, a visit to the Sainte Chapelle would be incomplete without discovering its most iconic area. Positioned on one of the tribunes, an elevated altar awaits. Direct your gaze upward to behold the emblematic relics of the Passion.

Access points to the Île de la Cité

Currently, access to the Île de la Cité is from two different points in Paris. You can go to either of these two access points:

  • From the right bank of the Seine River (Châtelet metro stop): the entrance to the island is via the Pont au Change. You must show your reservation voucher at the Tour de l'Horloge checkpoint.
  • From the left bank of the Seine River (metro stop Saint-Michel Notre-Dame): the entrance to the island is via the Pont Saint Michel. You must show your reservation voucher at the checkpoint located at the intersection of Quai des Orfèvres and Boulevard du Palais.

Free entrance

Admission to the Sainte Chapelle is free for the following persons:

  • Young people from the European Union between 18 and 25 years old.
  • Children under 18 years of age, regardless of their nationality.

In order to acquire the free admission mentioned above, you'll have to go to the site’s ticket office and present a valid ID demonstrating your eligibility for a free ticket.

Admission is also free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month between January 1 and March 31, between November 1 and December 31, and the third weekend of September.

Conciergerie + Sainte-Chappelle combo ticket

The Sainte-Chapelle is right next to the Conciergerie, a former royal palace of the French kings that underwent a transformation into a prison. Notably, historical figures like Marie Antoinette were held captive within its walls.

For a comprehensive experience, we recommend a combo ticket for both the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie. Alternatively, you may opt for the Go City Paris Pass tourist card, which includes tickets to the Sainte Chapelle and the Conciergerie, along with admission to various other must-see monuments in Paris.
